Soft Tissue Oral Surgery Recovery Guide

You have undergone soft tissue surgery to an area in the mouth. The wound has been closed with stitches and will require a period of healing over the coming days and weeks.

What to Expect After the Procedure

Pain and Discomfort
Once the local anaesthetic wears off, it is normal to experience mild to moderate discomfort at the surgical site. This is usually most noticeable during the first 2-3 days and can generally be managed with paracetamol and ibuprofen taken as directed.

Swelling
Minor swelling is common and may increase during the first 48-72 hours before gradually improving.

Bleeding
A small amount of blood staining or oozing is common during the first 24 hours. If bleeding occurs, apply firm pressure with a clean gauze swab or handkerchief for 20 minutes without repeatedly checking the area.

Stitches
Most stitches used inside the mouth are dissolvable and will usually soften and fall out within 2-3 weeks. Occasionally they may come away earlier as the wound heals.

Appearance of the Wound
The surgical site may initially appear white, yellow, or grey. This is a normal part of healing and does not necessarily indicate infection.

What To Do After the Procedure

Pain Relief
Take painkillers (usually both paracetamol and ibuprofen) as soon as possible after the procedure, so that they are working when the local anaesthetic wears off. Continue to take painkillers regularly for the first few days, whether or not you are in pain.

Sleeping
Sleep on several extra pillows for the first two nights, so that your head is more elevated than usual. This helps the swelling go down more quickly. It may be beneficial to place a towel over the pillow if there is blood in your saliva.

Oral Hygiene
Good oral hygiene is important for healing.

Diet
For the first few days:

Examples of suitable foods include pasta, yoghurt, soup, eggs, fish, and mashed potato.

Smoking and Vaping
If you usually smoke or vape, avoid this for as long as possible after surgery. Smoking delays wound healing, increases the risk of infection, and can worsen discomfort.

Activity
Avoid strenuous exercise and heavy physical activity for the first 24-48 hours, as this may increase bleeding and swelling.

Histology Results

If tissue has been removed for microscopic examination, it will be sent to the laboratory for analysis.

Results are usually available within 2-3 weeks and will be discussed at your follow-up appointment or communicated separately.
